Release – For Immediate Release - 2 April 2006
Meigle
Community Garden

Following a
series of frustrating delays caused by adjacent building works and then the
weather in March, work finally started on the second phase of the long
anticipated Meigle Square Garden Project over the weekend.
The first
stage commencing with a drystane wall at the rear was started with the valuable
assistance of Gordon Barton and volunteers from the Central Scotland Branch of
the Drystone Wall Association. Variable
weather slowed things down and increased the stickiness of the soil, but
assistance from Perth and Kinross Council workers and a number of
Meigle volunteers kept things moving.
The workers were kept fed and watered over the weekend by the Kinloch
Arms and The Joinery Coffee Shop.
A planting
list has been provided by Beechgrove Garden for flower beds which was on display
at the Square, together with a
number of photographs of the project to-date
The flagship rear wall will be getting prepared for filming later in the
month. Much work remains to be done
and in particular Gordon will be seeking further volunteer as well as
professional dyking support over the coming weeks.
All this hard construction activity is being enabled by more than £20,000
received in grants and donations supplementing the fund raising efforts in the
community.
There
is to be a further training course next weekend when members of the community
will be building raised beds with local stone kindly donated by George McLaren
of Meigle. If anyone would like to
participate they should note their interest with Sue or Nick Cole on 01828
640763, Gordon Barton on 07971 485893 email gordon@strathislastonework.com or
Pearl Graham. Volunteers to help in
the evenings with the drystane wall should contact Gordon direct.
