Press Release 26th SEPTEMBER 2005

Strathmore & the Glens Community Market

Press Release - For Immediate Release – 25th September

‘Blair High leads the way in Promoting Scottish Produce’

The sun shone on the Wellmeadow during Saturday’s Community Market, which was celebrating ‘Scottish Food Fortnight’ promoting Scottish produce.

Sue Cole, Executive Director of Strathmore and the Glens reported that the Market was supported by 17 traders, including a guest appearance from Caithness Cheese, whose young traders had started their journey at 4.30am from Lybster, Caithness to support the market.  A big thank you must go to award winning chef, Willy Macleod of the Cornerstone Restaurant and Scottish Preserves, who was the main sponsor of the market and who gave his time to organised the first-class programme of events which were very much enjoyed by the visitors to the market.

Local Chef, Ronnie MacDonald of Cargil’s Restaurant undertook the first cookery demonstrations, which created a mouth watering aroma throughout the Wellmeadow and was ably followed by local market trader George from Braes of Coul, Peel Farm, who produced a curry made from local lamb.

Blairgowrie High School’s Master Chefs ably assisted by Hill Primary Junior Chefs were the highlight of the day and thanks must go to Lynne Smith, Principal Teacher of Blairgowrie High School’s Home Economics Department for giving her time, enthusiasm and encouragement to organise the young people and make them feel at ease in front of a large crowed who had gathered to watch their demonstrations.  Lynne spoke about the new Hospitatility Programme being offered at the High School and the constant fundraising that was taking place to ensure that the Young Chefs were suitably equipped.

Gordon MacGregor from Blairgowrie High School’s demonstration in the afternoon was first class and was definitely a young chef to follow.  Gordon had recently been down to London to experience life in the kitchen of Gary Rhodes.

Sue on behalf of Strathmore and the Glens would also like to say a big thank you to all those who gave their time for the demonstrations, Gordon’s Caterhire for the Cooking Equipment, Blair Concern for the sound system and Trevor Nichol for setting it up and making the announcements, Grant Thompson for providing the music and the young people and volunteers of Rattray School Marching Band Corp for supporting the day’s activities.

Produce ranging from local beef, lamb, butter, vegetables, herbs, fish, plants and  Jo of Caledonia Homebakes was sold out by lunchtime.

The next market is due to be held on Saturday, 22nd October and if any local producers would like to hire a stall they should contact Sue Cole on 01828 64073.  Alternatively, further details on the market and the work of Strathmore & the Glens can be found on  www.strathmoreglens.org.

Strathmore & the Glens would welcome help from anyone locally who has an interest in food and community issues and would ask that you contact Sue if you have any time or experience to offer.

Together we are greater than the sum of the parts’.

Strathmore & the Glen’s Community Market takes place  on the 4th Saturday of the month between 10am - 3pm in Blairgowrie Wellmeadow and the next market is scheduled for 22nd October.
