Strathmore
& the Glens Rural partnership Press Release Alyth
hosts special time to remember The people of Alyth marked five anniversaries last weekend, principally
the 60th anniversaries of the end of the Second World War, VE Day and
VJ Day Under the title of ‘Times to Remember’ other anniversaries marked were
the 75th birthday of the Alyth Royal British Legion, the 105th
anniversary of the Boer War and the 200th anniversary of Trafalgar. On the Friday evening a concert was organised in the Town Hall with an End
of War Theme, the audience joined in with all the old songs and the local Scouts
and Cubs had everyone in stiches with their campfire songs. There was a heritage display featuring military and wartime items in the
Town hall on the Saturday and Sunday, and the organisers were overwhelmed with
support from the town. Volunteers
from the BBC’s People’s War project were on hand to collect stories for
their website www.bbc.co.uk/ww2 and a
bronze bust of Alyth’s eldest citizen, Mr Anderson, aged 109 years was on
show. The highlight of the weekend was a Thanksgiving Service in the Parish
Church on the Sunday morning to mark the anniversary of the end of the Second
World War, music was by Perthshire Brass. A
parade with pipe bands and Legion Standards marched to the war memorial for a
brief dedication and a light
aircraft carried out a fly past much to the delight of the crowds.
VIPs travelled back to the town square in vintage Second World War
Vehicles. The Strathmore Air Cadets
also manned a harrier cockpit simulator outside the townhall.
A games afternoon then followed with a display by the Blue Arrows Display
Team and continued with a hill race, tug o’war contest, egg and spoon, sack
and three legged races and many other traditional sporting activities. Sue Cole, Executive Director of Strathmore & the Glens reported that
this was an excellent example of what can be achieved when communities work
together. We were approached by the
RBLS in October 2004 to help guide them through the management of the event and
from the first meeting offers of help came pouring in which made the whole
occasion a pure delight and personally, I was honoured to be associated with
such a special event. Alyth in East Perthshire has a population of around 2,000 but every Saturday morning coffee mornings are held and hundreds of pounds raised for local charities.
