PRESS RELEASE 27th November 2003

Switching on together in East Perthshire - Saturday, 29th November

Christmas is probably the most important time of year for independent retailers with Blairgowrie and Alyth being two towns certainly worth visiting on Saturday.

Strathmore & the Glens are hosting an Advent in Market in the Wellmeadow on 10am – 6pm and there promises to be something for everyone. The Christmas spirit will be in evidence with the stalls selling all sorts of goodies and the magical atmosphere created by special Christmas fragrances of pine branches and incense . . .  and of course hot mulled wine to keep you warm!  It will be an opportunity for friends and family to meet up and enjoy the day together and get absorbed in the excitement of Christmas.

There is to be a fun packed day, starting with the Lomond Ceilidh Band playing from 10am – 1pm.  Splash the Clown will be making an appearance from 12 – 2pm and the Radio Tay Road show will be broadcasting live during the afternoon.

This is a ‘pilot’ Christmas Market that has received assistance through the Rural Tayside LEADER+ Programme from the European Structural Funds.  The best seasonal shopping, fine food and family fun and entertainment will be found, all to coincide with the switching on of Rattray’s lights at 3.15pm.  A torch lit procession led by Blairgowrie and District Pipe Band will go from Rattray School to the Wellmeadow.  Once the processions arrive there will be carol singing, and the lights will be switched on at 4pm by Sir William Macpherson of Cluny and Blairgowrie.

Coinciding with the Advent Market, Alyth Merchants’ Association have been working hard organising their annual Victoria Day celebrations.  Events include a coffee morning between 10am and noon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care, and many local charities will have stalls with items for sale from 1 – 4.30pm.

Victorian games are planned in Alyth Square during the afternoon and the day concludes with a torch lit parade from the Guide Hut in Airlie Place to Alyth Square.  Once again the parade will be led by Santa Claus, with Blairgowrie & District Pipe Band and Alyth’s newly elected Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year.

The switching on of the lights is the fruition of months of hard work by an army of volunteers, which usually begins as early as January.  Not only does the work involve installing the lights which is a mammoth job itself, but it relies heavily on people’s generosity in fund raising throughout the year.

We hope the 29th will put East Perthshire firmly on the map and encourage many locals and visitors to visit Blairgowrie and the surrounding market towns to experience the cream of Strathmore’s independent retailers.

Full details of the both events can be found on the Partnership’s website www.strathmoreglens.org.

Many thanks
