Strathmore
& the Glens Rural partnership PRESS
RELEASE 24 May 2003 Community Market 24th May Following the success of last month’s Community
Market, Strathmore & the Glens hosted another market on Saturday at
Blairgowrie Wellmeadow. A
range of stalls offering local produce including Cheese, Fruit Wines, Plants,
Herbs, Local Crafts Home Baking, Local Lamb & Beef, Honey, Herbs &
Spices, Scented Soaps, Vegetables, Community Information to name but a few were
available. Despite fears that the
weather would dampen spirits at the market, the sun shone all day and Rattray
School Marching Band Corps once again excelled themselves by marching through the Town. The
children gave up their free time to entertain the visitors to the town who were
most impressed by the way they conducted themselves. Trade at the market was brisk
although being a Bank Holiday weekend many local people had taken advantage of
the long weekend to take a well earned break.
Visitors to the market came from far and wide, courtesy of a few coaches
that had been passing through and stopped to enjoy the market town ambience in
evidence at Blairgowrie. Sue
Cole, Executive Director, of the Rural Partnership once again reiterated the
importance of supporting local producers to the local rural economy and would
like to thank all the traders and customers who supported the market.
However, the challenge is for the permanent business owners to take
advantage of the influx and ensure that there are other attractions elsewhere in
the town. This could be for example
by music in the High Street or a shop window competition.
The Wellmeadow was historically the market place for the area and the
Community Market simply resurrects an old tradition.
Strathmore
and the Glen’s next event will be the Better Place to Live Fair which is to be
held on Saturday the 14th June in Blairgowrie Town Hall from 10am to
2pm where there will be many local voluntary groups and organisations taking the
opportunity to celebrate their successes over the past year.
The Fair will also incorporate a Funding Workshop to assist groups
looking for funding for their projects and details will be available of the RIAS
Millennium Awards, which offers grants of between £2,000 and £4,000 for people
living in Scotland who are 18 years or over and who have a bright idea for a
community project. There will also be a member of the Perth & Kinross Grants
Direct team on hand to give advice. The
Strathmore and the Glens website www.strathmoreglens.org
continues to growth from strength to strength and recently received the
endorsement of the Rural Community Gateway (www.ruralgateway.org.uk)
who reported ‘News, campaigns, events, funding and education updates from a
very informative site’. If anyone has any ideas for community projects or enhancements to the Strathmore area, the Partnership would welcome their views and would ask that they write to the Partnership at PO Box 6621 Blairgowrie PH12 8YF. The Rural Partnership is a voluntary organisation run by volunteers, the majority of who also have full time jobs, who simply strive to make the area a ‘Better Place to Live’ for the benefit of its inhabitants and future generations. |
