Strathmore
& the Glens Rural partnership PRESS RELEASE 20th October 2003
Strathmore & The Glens Community Market
This Saturday’s market (25th October) will be the
last Community Market of the season. The
original intention was only to hold the initial Strathmore Food Festival market.
But we were asked to continue and as a result ran a further 6 as a pilot
to see if markets would be sustainable in Blairgowrie.
Over the next few months Strathmore & the Glens will be digesting the
information obtained from the stall-holders, visitors, and merchants.
Indications so far are that there is considerable support for the market
to continue.
People sometimes forget Strathmore & the Glens is a voluntary organisation run by volunteers with big social consciences. People seem to think that we have pots of money and I am sorry to say we don’t. Our Rural Challenge Budget monies have to be spent before they can be reimbursed, which as in a chicken and egg situation means that the money has to be found upfront which can be difficult, and if we don’t spend it we lose it! This has made running the markets very difficult but to our credit is a prime example of making a small amount of funding go a long way. Markets are expensive to organise, especially when Road Closure Orders and other matters are involved. We have often been compared with Perth and Dundee markets but not only was the concept of our market different in that it was a ‘Community’ Market, we did not have the same funds available. At times it has been frustrating when we were reminded that the market lacked music, but we simply did not have the money available to address the situation. However, the Rattray School Marching Band supported every market whatever the weather and were greatly enjoyed by all.
The usual favourites will be at Saturday’s market
along with Grampian Country Foods and Mercury Signs and Designs. Perthshire
Brass Band will also be attending the market providing we can find twenty chairs
and a cover before Saturday, which is providing difficult without incurring
expensive hire fees.
So in closing, on behalf of Strathmore & the
Glens the Board would like to thank everyone for supporting the community market
initiative.
