RELEASE 20th April 2003
Strathmore & the Glens Food Festival - bringing the community together
Plans for this year's Strathmore Food Festival are well under way. The Community
Market to be held on Saturday 26th April from 10am to 3pm in Blairgowrie
Wellmeadow promises to bring a market town ambience to the centre of
Blairgowrie. Strathmore & the Glens would like to thank all the local
producers and organisations who are supporting the event.
The purpose of the Community Market is to allow local producers to promote their
products which in turn can have a positive impact on the creation of local
employment. There are a range of stalls from Organic Vegetables, Fruit Wines,
Cheeses, Preserves, Homebakes and Plants to name but a few. A number of local
organisations have also taken stalls to promote their activities, including
Tayside Energy & Efficiency Advice Centre who will be distributing free
energy efficient light bulbs. Strathmore & the Glens very much hope that the
community will support the market.
Research shows that markets can attract many visitors to areas where they are
held, which in turn has a very beneficial effect on local shops by increasing
customers and sales. We would urge local merchants not to feel threatened by the
market but realise its potential in increasing visitors to the town.
There is still time for local businesses to participate in the festival
activities as full details of events will be available on the Perth Food
Festival (www.perthfoodfest.com) and
Strathmore & the Glens (www.strathmoreglens.org)
websites as well as from the Blairgowrie Tourist Information Centre. Events to-date
include challenging the Cocktail Maestro at the Castleton House Hotel near
Glamis, special festival menu at the Rosemount Gold Hotel, Blairgowrie, Modern
and Imaginative food at the Lochside Lodge & Roundhouse Restaurant at
Bridgend of Lintrathen by Kirriemuir and the Burrelton Park Inn.
The YMCA in Coupar Angus is also holding a Healthy Eating Open Morning on
Monday, 28th April from 9.45am to noon. Linda McGrath, the community dietician,
will be on hand to answer any questions and everyone is asked to bring along
something which they think is healthy to eat, for discussion then consumption.
There will also be blood pressure machines, weighing scales, fat tapes and
measuring aids, so we can all take stock after the winter weather. Everyone
welcome. Admission free.
Community Learning is offering a Basic Food Handling Course. This is a one day
course run on Friday, 2nd May in Alyth Community Wing, from 9.30am to 4pm. There
will be a short recall one week later for those wishing a completion
certificate. This course is for anybody involved in handling food, whether work
related or in a voluntary capacity. The course is free and a crèche is
available. Further details available from John
Corrigan (012560 874234).
