Strathmore Centre for Youth Dialogue Report
on Strathmore Centre for Youth Dialogue (SCYD) AGM - 2005 Since the
official opening on the 20th May 2005 SCYD has enjoyed continued
support from young people and professionals.
The timing of opening just before the school holidays enabled the
committee to set the scene, anticipate the surge in interest and to
constructively involve young people in productive outlets. Up until
September they were open 3 days a week – Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays,
from noon – 6pm. In September
Mondays were added to their opening hours thanks to the support of Rory Maidens
PKC’s Youth Worker for Strathmore. In
reality there have been times when the shop has been open outside these times to
allow both individuals and groups access the Centre. During this
period over 922 young people accessed the shop as well as 144 adults comprised
of parents and professions. The range of
Service Providers using the shop to meet with their young people has
progressively increased and, at the moment the Youth Enquiry Service, Dialogue
Youth, Young Carers Project, Careers Scotland, Young Persons Health, Perth
College, Alyth Youth Partnership and the YWCA
use the shop on a regular basis. Agencies
such as Careers Scotland have enjoyed a high level of contact time with young
people seeking employment and carers advice now that they are more centrally
located. Dialogue Youth have also
had a very high level of involvement with the Youth People and are very active
in SCYD. The Youth
Enquiry Service, Young Scot and Dialogue Youth have played a proactive role in
helping to develop SCYD as a relevant youth service.
Young Scot in particular has become a promotional drive for the Local
Youth Forum to take forward. It is
evident that the Forum is both dynamic and creative in its work.
This in turn contributes to the Youth Council and ultimately to the Youth
Parliament. These brief
six months have been very productive ones for SCYD and the level of activity by
the young people has been rewardingly high.
The new Committee of Management’s first priority will be to consolidate
their budget position and set out their Business Plan for their Financial
sustainability. The young
people of Strathmore have aspirations and they are determined to translate those
into reality. The SCYD Centre is based
