Blairgowrie & Rattray Easter Fair

For a number of months now a small group of volunteers have been meeting every month to put a programme together not just to celebrate Easter, which this year the weekend starts on the 21st March through to Sunday 23rd, but to try and kick of the tourist season. The idea came out of a meeting between the Craft Workers and BEPTA and has grown ever since.

The committee is made up with volunteers from the following organisations: BEPTA, Strathmore & The Glens, Craft Workers, Blairgowrie & Rattray Pipe Band, Blairgowrie & Rattray Community Council, Blairgowrie Highlanders, Blairgowrie Illuminations, Blairgowrie Players, Blairgowrie Merchants, Blairgowrie & District Next Steps and Blairgowrie Tourist Office. Many of these representatives are wearing many hats, so the coverage is very wide spread across many organisations – Unity in the Community is at work here.

We have made ourselves into a proper constituted committee and are looking forward to working with others who organise events throughout the area. Murray Scott is the Chairman, Bob Ellis is Vice Chairman, Councillor Caroline Shiers is Secretary, Margaret Wotherspoon is the Treasurer and Sue Cole is in charge of the Project Fundfinding.

We have a very packed programme, which starts off with a Family Ceilidh on the Friday evening. On Saturday the programme starts at 8am and finishes at midnight. This includes a Cateran Trail Challenge, Strathmore & The Glens Community Market, Craft & Art Fair, Raptor Show, Bell Ringers, Pipe Band Parade, Rattray Marching Band, Children’s Events, Bouncy Castle, Face Painting, Story Telling, Panto or Play, Funfair, Bob The Bunny and we are hoping to get some live chickens and bunnies. In the evening it is hoped that there will be a 60’s Disco.

On Easter Sunday we have a smaller programme. Starting at 8am, we will be hoping that the rest of the Cateran Trail Challenge competitors will be finished or on their last miles of the 64 mile route. Then we have the Craft & Art Fair, a Church Service, two small Guided Walks, Highland Dancing, a display by the Blairgowrie Highlanders, the Pleasanton Fire Engine, the Blessing of an Easter Egg before a massed Easter Egg roll, Treasure Hunt, judging of Eggs & Bonnets, and then the prize giving for all competitions. The event will finish with a massed Pipe Band Parade.

Throughout the weekend there will be a competition to find the best dressed window display and also there will be music in some of the pubs and hotels.

So there will be something for everyone to take part in. Weatherwise, we have to remember that we could still be in the grips of winter, but we have a plan just in case. We will endeavour to put out regular press release as the event gets nearer, but we are urging all shop and business owners to get into the spirit of this weekend, also if there are any other organisations who would like to get involved, then just contact one of the office bearers.
